Official CONIFA tournament photographers Con Chronis and Lavinia Parlamenti took photos of matches featuring the teams of Tibet, Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus and Tuvalu.
I wanted to take these photos like a casual spectator, seeing and clicking away just like I would snap some frames on my Dads old 35mm film camera when I was a young boy. I was trying to make the photos look quite organic, getting some sun flare, capturing fans there to watch, like they were taken by a member of the public.
The images of the Tuvalu player on the ground, I was trying to show a casual approach to this player as he was stretching. I also liked the photos with young fans and flags in the picture.
These photos were taken during matches of the CONIFA World Football Cup in London in the summer of 2018. It was during matches where the teams of Tibet, Abkhazia, Northern Cyprus and Tuvalu were playing. I was working as a photographer for CONIFA.
There was a girl wearing a t-shirt with the logo of the World Cup ITALIA 90, and the word ABKHAZIA was written. I was working and had no time to ask why, but I guess it is something related to the colours of the flags (Italy and Abkhazia have the same green, white, and red. It is still a funny and nice mystery to me.
My favourite photo was the girl with the reflection of the TRNC flag (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) on her sunglasses, even if there is my finger on it. I like mistakes.
